Even though we didn’t get to plant many of our veggies this year, our one bed that we did plant has taken off and we even got to try some cherries this summer off our ‘North Star’ tree.
When I walked out there this morning I saw numerous tomatoes growing and little peppers popping out as well. This past weekend we were able to introduce Swiss chard to our family at the lake house - we have an abundance and it was a joy to share and have them try something new. And today for lunch I was able to walk out there and pick a bunch of kale to add to my smoothie. I picked enough to have it ready to go for another smoothie tomorrow!
It has been amazing to see so much come from one 4x8 bed! I can’t even imagine when we have about 11 to 13 of them planted next year.

The Leberts - Complete Transformation of an Urban Backyard
I first e-mailed Melissa with the message, "Could you even help someone like me with an small, ugly, city plot of land?" She immediately responded, "of course!”
We used to fondly (not really that fondly) refer to yard as the mud pit. After two dogs, five kids, and a trampoline there wasn't much other than weeds and dirt to look at. I had a dream of adding some beauty to our yard - to have a place that our now older family could sit and enjoy and hang out. The idea of adding lots of edibles was just the treat on top!
Melissa exceeded our expectations every step of the way. From the design, where she really listened to what we wanted, to implementation, where she excitedly worked her magic to transform our yard - we couldn't be happier!
We are now out in our yard every day enjoying the literal fruits of her labor! We enjoy having friends and family over and adore hanging out with our new friends the bees and butterflies. The other day my son, who primarily eats donuts, picked a leaf of chard and it ate it straight!
The Zonnefelds - Revamp of Existing Landscaping
Our space was not inspiring for me. It did not have a good flow, and I wanted to see more beauty when I was in my yard.
Melissa came highly recommended to us by friends. We were also excited that Rustic Hills specializes in edible landscaping. We wanted to be able to enjoy our yard through its natural beauty as well as feed our family.
We worked alongside Melissa and learned a lot from her. We were able to ask questions and learn from her expertise. She listened to what we wanted, and we are thrilled with the results.
We are looking forward to eating apples off of our trees, as well as adding fresh blueberries and blackberries to our salads. We ate a lot of cherry tomatoes this summer and fall! It has become a daily practice to go out to our garden as we are getting dinner going, and cutting fresh herbs and whatever else we can find to add to our meal.

The Hibbs - Creative Foundation Planting for New Construction
We loved our experience with Rustic Hills Garden Company! Our front yard was a completely blank slate and we had little to no landscaping or gardening knowledge.
Through our consultation, Melissa was able to take our goals for the space and make them into a reality with her creativity and awesome knowledge of different edible and non-edible options. In the end, we achieved a beautiful, low maintenance landscape and were still able to incorporate fun edibles that our family will enjoy together for many years!
